The Governor is the chief executive of the state whose function is to administer the laws of the state. One of the activities used to accomplish this function is the appointing of individuals to various state and local offices and the signing of grants and commissions. This series consists of letters and petitions relating to appointments, resignations, commissions, and contested elections. It also contains recommendations for various positions, detailed allegations of election fraud or corruption, or letters explaining the reason for resignation from office. Appointments to positions at the University of Alabama are documented in this series of records. Unique to Gov. Bagby's administration are records relating to appointments of examiners for the state banks, the appointment of an agent to receive and dispose of slaves that were seized due to their illegal entry into the state, and the appointment of Joseph E. Caro to translate the Spanish and French records located in the Mobile County Clerk's office.
